About Me

Hi, I’m Becky! Welcome to A Calculated Whisk, a food blog featuring creative gluten-free and paleo recipes. I’m so happy you’re here! My goal is to help you make delicious meals and treats without grains. You can see my recipe index here--all of the recipes are gluten-free. My first cookbook, Paleo Planet, is available for pre-order now and comes out on November 3rd! It includes over 125 internationally-inspired paleo recipes for breakfast, dinner, dessert, and more. I'm also available for freelance food styling and food photography.

Here I am with my fiancé Ben on a recent trip to Montana. Glacier
National Park is amazingly gorgeous.
I started this blog in 2013 as an excuse to spend more time making, eating, and talking about delicious food. For as long as I can remember I’ve loved to eat (often too much), and I have a huge weakness for desserts. While I enjoyed blogging from the start, my new hobby had an unintended impact: I gained almost twenty pounds during the first three months.

Not wanting to give up my new favorite activity, I searched for a solution, and found the paleo diet. Without grains, refined sugars, and processed foods, I started to lose weight. Forcing myself to only share recipes that are gluten-free, and usually paleo, is a great way for me to stay healthy. It also forces me to be more creative in the kitchen.

This was taken in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It's my dream
 to live in PR someday!
Since starting my blog, I've come to really enjoy food styling and food photography--it's one of my favorite parts of the job!  I love making beautiful food and setting up shots that tell a story and/or inspire others to hit the kitchen. You can check out my photography portfolio here.

In my non-food-blogging life, I just finished a master's program in speech and language pathology. I was an elementary school teacher for six years, and am excited to keep working in education in a more specialized way. I speak fluent Spanish and love languages. I also love traveling, hanging out with my cats, reading, doing yoga, and going out to eat.

My fiancé Ben and I just moved to from Boston (my home city) to Chattanooga, Tennessee (his home city). I also lived in Houston for four years and my mom is from Austin, so I feel like I can almost consider myself a southerner.

If you have any questions or comments about the site, recipes, or paleo and gluten-free eating, feel free to leave a comment here (or on any post) or send me an email (becky at acalculatedwhisk.com). I would love to hear from you! You can also subscribe to receive new recipes via email, or follow me on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter. I hope to connect with you soon!
Here I am with my cats Cupcake and Otto soon after I adopted them as kittens.
I found Cupcake in the middle of the road and got Otto at a shelter to keep her company!

  2. Have heard rave reviews of your food from Nathan Hall...as a vegetarian trying to do Whole 30, returned to your site for inspiration. Looking forward to trying some of your recipes this week. Thanks! (P.S. congratulations on your engagement and hooray, I love cats too).
